What's Actually in My Travel Box

Some links in this post are affiliate links. If you shop through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend things I'd actually pack myself.

People ask me what I actually bring when I travel. Not the aspirational version with the capsule wardrobe and the perfectly organized packing cubes — the real version. The stuff that earns a spot in my bag every single trip because at some point I forgot it and immediately regretted it.

Here's that list.

Travel Cord Case

Travel Cord Case

A small cord organizer changed the way I pack. Everything that used to live at the bottom of my bag in a tangle — charging cables, earbuds, a backup battery — has a spot now, and I can find all of it in under ten seconds. That sounds small until you're trying to find your phone charger at 6am in a hotel room with the lights off.

Toiletries Bag

Toiletries Bag

A hanging toiletry case is one of those things that sounds like a nice-to-have until you've used it in a hotel bathroom with two inches of counter space. It hangs on the towel bar, everything stays organized, and you're not shifting shampoo bottles around trying to find your face wash at midnight.

Water Bottle

Water Bottle

Eighteen ounces is exactly right for travel. It gets through a security checkpoint full if you empty it before and refill after, it fits in my bag without taking over, and the insulation keeps things cold through a full travel day.

Silk Sleep Mask

Silk Sleep Mask

There's always a gap in the hotel curtains, just enough light to keep you awake. A silk mask fixes that without the scratchiness of a cheaper one. It sits softer against your face, doesn't catch on your eyelashes, and you forget it's there by the time you fall asleep.

Sleeping Ear Plugs

Sleeping Ear Plugs

The hotel across the street from your hotel will always be under construction. The couple in the next room will always have a different schedule than yours. Ear plugs are a $10 fix for a $200-a-night problem, and these fit comfortably enough to actually sleep in.

Foldable Travel Hangers

Foldable Travel Hangers

Hotel hangers are often the kind you can't take off the rod. If you're the kind of person who unpacks when you arrive — and I am, because nothing makes a hotel room feel more like a hotel room than living out of a suitcase — foldable hangers are worth the 90 seconds they take to pack. A full 12-pack folds flat and takes up almost no space.

Portable Charger with Built-in Cables

Portable Charger with Built-in Cables

The detail that sold me on this one: the cables are built directly into the unit. There's nothing extra to bring, nothing to forget on the nightstand when you check out. It charges multiple things at once and it's compact enough that I actually remember to bring it instead of leaving it on my desk because I forgot to pack it.

Luggage Tags

Luggage Tags

I know this one sounds boring. I didn't think about luggage tags until I watched five identical black suitcases come out on the same carousel and genuinely wasn't sure which one was mine. A distinctive tag is a five-second problem-solve for something that will definitely happen at some point. These are leather-style with a privacy cover, which I appreciate.

That's the box. Everything in it was chosen because it solves a real travel problem, not because it photographs well. If you pick up any of it through the links above, thank you — it helps keep Sunshine and Travel running, and it doesn't change your price at all.

Happy travels.
